Abstract

The prevalence of burnout among healthcare providers has been on the rise in recent times. Despite numerous studies and surveys highlighting these elevated levels of burnout, none have specifically investigated its primary cause. To address this gap, researchers conducted an online survey targeting 800 general surgeons across India, gathering 221 unique and complete responses for analysis. 49.77% of the general surgeons indicated that insufficient work-life balance and high workload were the primary reasons for experiencing burnout. While many expressed dissatisfactions with compensation and medical infrastructure, they also expressed belief in having sufficient opportunities for learning and skill development in their field. Further research is warranted to explore burnout in other medical specialties.
