Abstract

The landraces of Indica rice (Oryza sativa L.) are well adapted to drought conditions throughout their life. Their superior germination and seedling root characters enable them to withstand drought during their early stages. To identify water stress-induced genes expressed in the radicle of a landrace, mRNA differential display was performed. Differential display identified cDNAs representing water stress-induced mRNAs. Water stress-induction of ESTs representing genes encoding a wound- and jasmonate-induced Bowman-Birk trypsin inhibitor and allene oxide cyclase involved in jasmonate biosynthesis has been described. Water stress-induction of two hitherto unreported product-unknown ESTs has also been shown. Landrace Nootripathu-specific potential single nucleotide polymorphisms in the reported sequences have been discussed.
