A Review of Classification of Gastric Carcinoma

Background: Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and also the fourth most common cause of cancer related deaths. Management of gastric cancer depends upon the staging and extent of the disease. As such many staging systems were introduced from time to time to better understand the tumour and improve its management.

Aims and Objectives: This chapter aims to improve the understanding of these staging systems.

Discussion: Several classification systems have been given from time to time such as Borrman’s classification in 1926, Japanese classification, Morson And Dowson Classification, Goseki classification, Ming’s classification, Lauren’s classification, Histological classification, TNM classification etc. This chapter discusses all these classifications and their salient features for their better understanding.

Conclusion: This chapter was an insight to the various classifications that were given from time to time regarding Gastric Carcinoma. Every classification had its pros and cons and each classification has led to improvements in the field of surgery as far as management and research is concerned.
